The Making Of The Documentary: In Our Mothers' Gardens

IN OUR MOTHERS’ GARDENS is a visual love letter about the relationship between Black women and their daughters that can sometimes be taut with tension and rooted in self-sacrifice.

This beautiful documentary emotes without being overly sentimental about mothering while Black.

It’s a slow sip and a nourishing balm for your spirit that to be truly enjoyed requires a snack and a favorite libation.

A quote from Alice Walker’s book “In Search of Our Mothers’ Gardens” opens the film and inspired the title. The director Shantrelle P. Lewis, appears in the film and also knits a collective narrative together through interviews with an array of women from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.

The documentary is often a literal collage of images that speaks to the complexity and colorfulness of Black womanhood through photographs, color, picture frames, music and animation.

If you need to fill up your cup with the sweet elixir of Black Girl Magic and the strong brew that often defines motherhood, this film acquired by ARRAY and now streaming on Netflix, is worth the watch!
